CLOS SAN LORENZO Valtellina Superiore Sassella Riserva DOCG

$79.00

The term “Clos” refers to a French word for vineyards enclosed by walls. The San Lorenzo Convent vineyard, the only one in Sondrio province encircled by an ancient stone wall, lies at the heart of the Sassella production zone, offering a stunning view of the surrounding terraced landscape.

For centuries, this Clos was owned by nuns, gifted to them in 1100 along with the Convent by the affluent Capitanei family of Sondrio. Historical records indicate that by 1400, the wine produced from the Clos was already a source of revenue for the nuns. Since 2005, Mamete Prevostini revitalized the Clos, implementing significant enhancements, such as replanting Nebbiolo vines using the girapoggio system to optimize sun exposure and streamline cultivation, while deepening our understanding of this distinctive terroir to amplify its inherent potential.

The south-facing Clos enjoys excellent sunlight and benefits from Lake Como’s breezes, known as la breva, which maintain a naturally dry and healthy environment. The soil, predominantly sandy and composed of glacial rock debris, offers superior drainage capacity. The clos wine is elegant, intense and balanced, the tannins are well integrated and
it has a lingering finish. It boasts a surprisingly aromatic depth, dominated by small
red fruits and spices. Of great finesse and longevity, it is the iconic wine
representing the San Lorenzo Convent winery and the purest expression of the
beauty of mountain Nebbiolo.

Pair with:

Brasato al Nebbiolo (beef braised in red wine) and Polenta taragna (buckwheat and cornmeal polenta with cheese.  Duck prosciutto or terrine with fig jam;  Grilled lamb chops with rosemary; Roast beef with truffle sauce, venison with juniper berries, or Ossobuco with risotto Milanese; tuffed eggplant with tomatoes and Parmesan or a wild mushroom and truffle risotto; mature hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano (24–36 months) and Pecorino Toscano.
