THE WINE OF ATILLA THE HUN
THE WINE OF ATILLA THE HUN – Unno: Malanotte del Piave from Antonio Facchin & Figli
Antonio Facchin & Figli have been making wine for over 150 years, Wine makers Angelo and Giuseppe Facchin have one of the first DOCG Raboso del Piave single varietals in the Veneto region. Grown near the Piave River in the Veneto region about an hour north of Venice, the Raboso del Piave varietal takes advantage of the stony claylike soil to create a wine that has an intense ruby red color with violet reflections that may be garnet in older vintages. The balsamic bouquet has spicy notes of red fruit, currants, and blackberry. This elegant and austere wine is pleasantly tannic with a clean slightly acidic scent on the finish.
Named Malanotte del Piave after the small ancient village of Borgo Malanotte where legend has it that Atilla the Hun drank the wine when he stopped after battle on his attempt to sack Rome. Unno translates from Italian to English as Hun. The unique label shows Attila in Borgo Malanotte, which is currently used as the site location for many Italian films.
